i feel like this is what people who want to express they are NOT racist say. they don't understand that it's the epitome of a racist comment.
Hah--yes! When I told Dad the story, he compared it to the people who would say things like "I'm not racist--some of my best friends are Black!"
it's also something my sisters and I had to keep telling my mother NOT TO SAY back when we were in college in the 90s.
Oof. Yeah, my 82 year old dad still sometimes slips up and says something...not great (he occasionally has trouble remembering to call Asian people Asian and not Oriental). But at least he's remorseful and apologetic afterwards.
