I found the most effective way to get them to shut up was to be a brat.
You want me to have a kid? Awesome. So, when will you be buying me a house in the best public school district in the state? Also, you have to have funds saved for the possibility the kid will want private school. Don't forget, extracurriculars, b/c you have to do that for college. Oh, and of course, I'll need "keeping up with the jones" supplement funds because the kid is probably gonna need a Stanley by 3, if my friends are to be believed. Also, how many hours will you be available to watch the child so I can focus on my career and what I want out of this life. I may have also pointed out I'm still paying the college loans since I had no education fund at all (was it petty? yes, my rising sign is Scorpio,I do petty).
Shut them right up. Don't let her convince you to adopt Ginger regardless, but don't forget to mention it's not even on the table w/o financial and time compensation (you don't know if the right thing is gonna fall into your lap and you're back to 40 hours a week doing something).
