They were shocked to learn they could get in trouble if they now admit they were in Drew's house when the shot happened and heard a ringtone (not Drew's) just before the shooting.
Had they gone to the defense attorney they could have made a deal. After all what they "stole" from the wall safe were documents Drew was using to blackmail her mother (something that was exposed in court). I can't see there not being a deal to charge them with a misdemeanor with a small fine or community service in exchange for their testimony.
Instead Willow will go free and Michael will be charged for the murder and could go to jail when they know he is innocent.
I agree that I have no idea what Michael is thinking or if he is actually working since we never see nor hear about his business. I'm ok with NuMichael being mysterious for a while, but at some point we need to see other sides of the character. Mysterious can be interesting but only for so long.
At any rate, the writers have written Sai and Trina doing the stupidest thing they could do in this situation. My biggest pet soap pet peeve.
