while watching Survivor, I ate a $6 frozen Trader Joe’s pizza with four toppings from the freezer instead of ordering a $24 plain pie from my neighborhood pizzeria. The night before I ate $6 Trader Joe’s Kung Pao chicken from the freezer instead of ordering dinner from my neighborhood Chinese restaurant. Pizza and Chinese food used to be cheap takeout/delivery.
I wasn’t consciously participating in the general strike. I am making conscious choices all the time about how and where I spend my money because everything has gotten so expensive. I live in NYC which was already expensive and I never had much money. Now I’m living on SS and a pension. And there is no point in living here if I don’t go out and do things. Thankfully I have a rent stabilized apartment. This month some of the food budget went to theatre tickets. And I’m thankful that I’m able to do that and not struggling just to pay the rent.
