That means they don't understand the consequences of things until it directly impacts them.

When it was "just" blacks and minorities, young people "who don't know how the world works," and others they can easily group into the "not like me" people who are "getting what they deserve" and cheer on the mayhem. They are the walking/sitting embodiment of the "First they came" list.
