***************
Our upcoming general election in November is going to be wild. Mamdani is far from sure to be our next mayor. The campaigns against him from Eric Adams, running for re-election as an Independent and Curtis Sliwa (😳) as the GOP candidate will be all about stopping socialism/communism in NYC.

I doubt that Cuomo will run as an Independent. He’s too experienced to not see the writing on the wall here. That said, very few people voted in this primary and many of them were early voters (who skewed young). Election Day was 100+ degrees so a lot of potential Cuomo voters did not end up voting on Election Day. I’m sure he’s crunching some numbers before he decides. About 28% of eligible voters voted in this primary. That makes me angry but it also makes me feel kind of powerful because my vote really counts. I’m one of the deciders. 😸

Personally, I don’t believe for a minute that Mamdani will be able to achieve all of the free stuff he has promised. That said, I’m 100% behind him, especially given the alternatives. Maybe somebody more experienced (and possibly less naive?) would have been a better choice. But I think the older, more experienced Mark Levine as Comptroller (essentially the CFO of NYC to the mayor being the CEO) would be a good pairing with Mamdani.

And maybe it will take a true idealist to be brave enough to step up and lead the resistance to what is going on in this country. I think Mamdani is that kind of idealist. With his lack of experience, it could go either way — he could get eaten alive by the Trump administration or he could become one of the true leaders against it.

I do think Mamdani has one of the best on-the-ground campaigns that I’ve ever seen, featuring a huge army of very enthusiastic idealistic volunteers. I have not seen anything like it since I worked on President Obama’s first presidential campaign. Mamdani’s campaign really reminds me of Obama’s. That gives me hope for November. It also might show the power of endorsements from AOC and Bernie Sanders.
